Chapter 5: Robin

Our wonderful time together was over for now. We had to finally face reality, face his family, and face Maggie, and my brother. What should have been a wonderful moment fell into a deep dark hole of silence between the two of us as we rode back to his family’s mansion. When we drove through the gates there were only a few cars left. Not the many cars I remember seeing as we drove away. One car I spotted and it was Wayne’s’. He would wait to try and give me a lecture.

I tightened my grip on Edward’s hand.

Looking at Edward, with him holding my hands because he knew I was nervous about the whole situation, he confidently glanced at me and smiled. “Don’t worry, baby, it will work out just fine and we can be married.” That only happens in the movies I thought. I have to look in his mother’s face when clearly she appears to favor Maggie as her future daughter in law. That was a lot to overcome. And what about his father.

I knew nothing about him and whether he would even accept me. I relayed my concerns to Edward and he had said, “Don’t worry about the old man. Men are different. They see life different. When I discussed you with him all he said was do you love her? And does she have what you want and need under the sheets?” That made me smile as I exited the car with Edward standing holding the door open and taking my unsteady hand.

We made a few steps and I stopped, “Do you think it’s wise to hold my hand?”

“When will it ever be wise or right if not now? We have to bring an end to all of this now in front of my family and in front of your brother.”

As Edward reached for the door, it opened as if someone had announced our arrival. I walked in with shaky hands and an unsteady pace. If Edward wasn’t holding my hand, I would have fallen on my face. We walked on the expensive marble flooring in the entrance way. As we moved more into the house the marble gave way to wood flooring and expensive rugs and a large curving stairway with wood banisters greeted us.

Before reaching the large sitting area, Wayne showed up. He stood in front of Edward. “I need to talk to my sister.” He glances down at my hand. And out of habit I pull it from Edward. “Edward you have done my sister a disservice.” He was speaking differently as if he had seen too many Victorian movies with Alexis. Something straight out of Gone With The Wind.

“I’ve come to right whatever wrong I’ve done to Robin.” A knight in shining armor. This was getting too crazy for me.

“What is it you want Wayne?” He pulls me aside.

“Let him go into that Lion’s den alone and deal with that mess he created. You don’t have the experience or the pedigree to fight with those she wolves.
